Tesla’s Model S P100D is a remarkable feat of automotive engineering in many ways, and delivers an experience which provides a tangible insight into the future of motoring.
Combining performance, safety, and efficiency, the Model IS P100D has reset expectations for the car of the future with the highest possible safety ratings, ludicrous performance capabilities, the longest range of any electric vehicle, and over-the-air software updates that continuously make it better.
With two motors, one in the front and one in the rear, the Model S P100D digitally and independently controls torque to the front and rear wheels. The result is unparalleled traction control in all conditions. Conventional all-wheel-drive cars employ complex mechanical linkages to distribute power from a single engine to all four wheels. Unlike conventional all-wheel-drive vehicles that sacrifice fuel efficiency for increased traction, Tesla’s electric all-wheel-drive system increases efficiency.
The P100D is also the quickest four-door sedan ever built, and “ludicrous” mode will see it accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 2.7 seconds. And thanks to the battery pack along the floor pan, centered between the axles, the Model S P100D has an extremely low centre of gravity. This provides for superior handling and no other production car has a more ideal placement of mass for optimal handling.
The battery’s location and low centre of gravity also greatly reducing the risk of rollover while at the same time enhancing handling and performance. Without an engine, the car has a crumple zone much larger than other performance sedans to absorb the energy of a front-end impact. The P100D is also one of the safest cars on the road, and it comes with an NCAP 5-star safety rating.

The gem of the interior is the 17-inch touchscreen, which is angled toward the driver and includes both day and night modes for better visibility without distraction. The 17” centre touchscreen seamlessly integrates media, navigation, communications, cabin control and vehicle data into one intuitive interface. Many functions are mirrored on the instrument panel and are voice-activated to focus the driver’s attention on the road.
The cabin also combines meticulous noise engineering with Tesla’s uniquely quiet powertrain to obtain the sound dynamics of a recording studio.
The Model S P100D also features a medical grade HEPA air filtration system, which removes at least 99.97 per cent of particulate exhaust pollution and effectively all allergens, bacteria and other contaminants from cabin air. The bioweapon defence mode creates positive pressure inside the cabin to protect occupants – making the Model S P100D the ultimate in clean, green (and mean) motoring.
