1888 Hotel Review: A hidden hospitality gem

1888 Hotel

As a heritage listed 5-star boutique hotel, 1888 is one of Sydney’s hidden corporate hospitality gems, writes Craig Donaldson

1888 Hotel is a heritage listed 5-star boutique hotel, eatery, bar and event space that combines Sydney’s old-world charm with contemporary design & modern-day comforts. Originally constructed in 1888 as a warehouse for wool storage, the Pyrmont-based building has undergone a $30 million redevelopment and was re-launched late last year as a boutique hotel.

Attention to detail in its restoration has been meticulous. The interior design of the hotel is distinctly Australian and pays thoughtful homage to the building’s 19th century heritage. With generous use of reclaimed iron bark, exposed brick walls, old concrete, sandstone and bronze, a walk through the hotel reveals original white washed wooden beams, huge sound-proofed period windows, lovely high ceilings and recycled timber work stations.

The building’s heritage design is complemented nicely by a stylish, modern and urban feel thanks to careful use of bespoke furniture, colourful and contemporary Australian artwork, as well as artful employment of glass and steel. A modern five-storey internal atrium fills the boutique hotel with natural light, and overall the building nicely blends old-world 1888 charm with a chic and contemporary feel.

In fact, the unique interior design has led 1888 Hotel to become the world’s first “Instagram hotel” and it now offers a range of specials for guests (including a free night’s accommodation for taking a great Instagram shot with the hashtag #1888Hotel), and even has a wall of Instagram photos and a special place for 1888 ‘selfies’ in the hotel.

On the accommodation front, the hotel features 90 bedrooms, ranging from the 15m2 shoebox and 18m2 queen bedrooms through to a 30m2 attic (with 17m2 external space). In addition, there is the 36m2 Williamson room which overlooks the city surrounds and comes with its own private entrance. The hotel also features in-room iPads, smart TVs with media hubs, custom-made bedding with luxury MicroCloud bed toppers and bathrooms which come equipped with walk-in rain showers. The ambience is relaxed, the rooms are very comfortable, the staff are really friendly and professional, the complimentary WiFi is strong and the in-house barista makes a cracking coffee.

1888 Hotel also offers a select range of modern corporate and private event spaces, which are intimate yet stylish. Featuring modern facilities, the hotel is great for small to medium size breakaway meetings, presentations, networking functions, as well as private corporate events – especially given the hotel is just a few minutes from the Sydney Exhibition and Conference Centre, Darling Harbour and The Star.

For a 5-star hotel, pricing is reasonable by Sydney standards (rooms start from around $180) and given its convenient location, 1888 Hotel is one of Sydney’s hidden hospitality gems.
